DON EDDY

WINDOWS DOORS AND STAIRS

Don Eddy began his series: WDAS (windows, doors and stairs) three years ago.  While the series began for practical reasons, i.e., the desire to work on a small-scale piece as a respite after months of working on a large-scale multi-panel painting, it addressed at the time and continues to address the artist’s interest in both portals and light.  The obvious subject of these paintings may be the windows, doors and stairs, the more profound subject is light.  Light has been a subject for Don Eddy since his early painting--of the urban environment and cars with reflections--to this day.  Eddy realized he had been photographing windows, doors and stairs for years, portals from one space to another, from one level of consciousness to another.  He has used fragments of these subjects in his major works, but creating the series has allowed him to explore a range of light-- spiritual light, as it pours through church windows and fragments into a rainbow of colors on a stone floor; or as it illuminates Madrid’s crystal palace  in full bright sunshine with dancing shadows.  Like the large polyptychs and triptychs that depict cities where the artist travels, such as Paris, Madrid, Budapest, etc., the images for this small-scale series come from places far and wide: II is from a Gothic church in Barcelona; III the Matthias Church in Budapest; IV Palacio de Cristal in Madrid; V Votivkirche in Vienna.  Eddy will continue to create these intimate scale works, which are unlimited in the possibilities they present.
