I have always been fascinated by these words. Every time I hear them I think of the ‘Hanging Gardens of Babylon,’ conjuring lush images of enormous walls of cascading flora saturating the air with fragrances and colors never before seen or smelled. It seems a place of solace, serenity and beauty – and as I am a great admirer of Opera I feel this subject to be of such grand proportions that it would be perfect material for Grand Opera, yet, surprisingly no composer has embraced it.
