| This is to let you know that the first exhibition of the autumn season at Nancy Hoffman Gallery will be Objects of Desire II opening on September 8 and continuing through October 4. The exhibition will include painting, sculpture, drawing, glass, ceramic, photography-a wide range of media. Each of the objects is inspired by the theme of the show; addressing temptation for the eye and excitement for the mind, stimulating the "desire" for possession. The mystery and magic that art provides for the human soul is the "stuff" that fuels all of the works in "Objects." | |
| While Nancy Hoffman Gallery's first Objects of Desire, two years ago, focused on this theme, the media were limited to painting, sculpture and glass. The second exhibition provides a broader spectrum of style, medium, scale, number of artists and, of course, temptation. | |

| All works-with the exception of a poetic Juan Gonzalez colored-pencil drawing, July 11, 1974, and Steve Lovi's dye-transfer sumptuous still life photos from the '80s--have been created especially for the exhibition. | ![]() Juan Gonzalez, July 11, 1974, 1974, colored pencil, pastel on paper, 32 x 27 inches |
| Painters included in the exhibition are: David Bierk, Carolyn Brady, Don Eddy, Michael Gregory, Gregory Ray Halili, Lucy Mackenzie, Susan Norrie, George Pkhakadze, Joseph Raffael. | |
| The "objects" they have created range from Michael Gregory's depictions of a voluptuous jar of cherries-a contemporary Old Master work in which the jar of cherries emerges from darkness to light suffused with a warm, glowing atmosphere; to Joseph Raffael's bookcase filled with treasured volumes located next to a garden door-both books and nature rendered with passion; to Don Eddy's white egret centered between cascading flowering branches of a weeping cherry tree; to Carolyn Brady's sparkling, glittering goblets created in watercolor like diamonds in paint. These are among the many splendors in two dimension to be included in the exhibition, ranging in scale from 6 x 6 feet to 5 x 5 inches. | ![]() Don Eddy, Echo, 2001, photography mounted on dibond, 21 x 12 inches |
| Sculptors included in the exhibition are: Nicolas Africano, Viola Frey, Brian Hirst, Marc Leuthold, John Okulick, Ginny Ruffner. | |
| The "objects" they have created range from Viola Frey's spirited glass heads, full of expression, with colorful hair and dress based on energized line drawings; to Nicolas Africano's classical, yet contemporary, contemplative glass figure of a woman in leotard-her face of opal glass which appears to be white and her leotard in a rich gray glass; to John Okulick's small illusionist boxes containing sparkling objects which, when one approaches them, turn out to be fishing hooks and lures; to Brian Hirst's golden bowls in glass; and Marc Leuthold's hand-carved circular disk-like clay sculptures. | ![]() Ginny Ruffner, Squeezing Water from Stones, 2001, stainless steel, bronze, glass, 33 x 30 x 19 inches |
