Michael
Gregory's work has always explored the subject of nature in its manifold
forms.
His early paintings were landscapes, filled with bales of hay in sculptural
formations.
From the landscape he has distilled an icon, the tulip set against a black
background.
For Gregory the tulip is a symbol of beauty and impermanence. The single
bloom, be it tulip,
orchid or sweet pea sits icon like in the center of a black background.
Each flower is unique,
some are tightly closed, others stretch their petals open
spanning the width of the small vertical wood panel. Like contemporary
old master paintings,
Gregory's works are oil on gessoed wood panels.
